Former Labour Party MP, who died in 2005, as a result of a recurring battle with a brain tumour. Unfortunately, I was not old enough to know who she was in her prime of political success and regretfully have only just discovered her sheer brilliantness.
Fundamental in the signing of the Good Friday Agreement of 1998 and the ongoing battle trying to encourage the people of Northern Ireland to sign it and stand by it.
She was a person who I really would have loved to have met. A laidback upfront political character who stood her ground in a predominantly male environment. She battled with a brain tumour in silence whilst the British press had a field day, discussing her weight gain and hair loss unbeknown to them of her condition.
A woman who did not take no for an answer, and who bravely brought Northern Ireland to a peaceful agreement, and was just a down to earth, witty, and incredibly intelligent person. A figure missed a great deal in Parliament today.
